Backend Developer - Data Team

Commitment: Part-Time (10–15 hours/week) | Flexible scheduling

Compensation: Unpaid, with opportunity for course credit and growth into Part-Time/Full-Time
Role Overview
We’re seeking a motivated Back-End Developer Intern eager to gain hands-on startup experience in data streaming and backend infrastructure. You’ll work directly with our engineering team and receive guidance from our partners at Confluent to build scalable backend services, implement real-time data pipelines, and contribute to the foundation of our data architecture.
Key Responsibilities
- Learn to design and build real-time data pipelines with support from Confluent engineers.
- Assist in implementing data streaming solutions using Apache Kafka and related tools.
- Develop and maintain back-end services and APIs in Java (preferred) or another backend language.
- Support data ingestion, processing, and storage workflows for scale and performance.
- Contribute to monitoring, testing, and documenting streaming data systems.
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure reliable data flows powering customer-facing applications.

Qualifications
- Strong programming foundation in Java (or Python/Scala with willingness to learn Java).
- Interest in data streaming, pipelines, and distributed systems.
- Familiarity with Kafka or similar event-driven technologies is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Self-starter who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, adaptability, and strong desire to learn.
